Etna ash cloud halts flights at Catania airport again
A fresh ash plume from Mount Etna forced Catania airport to suspend take-offs and landings on Tuesday morning. Airspace sectors were closed as the plume drifted toward the airport.
An ash cloud from Mount Etna halted flights at Catania airport on Tuesday morning. The volcano is back at the highest red warning level.
The aviation warning system Vona said the ash plume reached about four kilometres and was drifting south toward the airport. Volcanic ash and wind conditions forced the closure of airspace sectors C1 and B3.
Take-offs and landings in Catania were suspended until at least 10:00.
Etna has been highly active for weeks. In August, ash clouds repeatedly caused restrictions and flight cancellations at Catania.
