Red Bull secures land at Salzburg Airport for possible new hangar

Red Bull has secured a parcel of land at Salzburg Airport, right next to Hangar 7, according to the Salzburger Nachrichten. A new hangar could go up there. The company has not confirmed any plans.

Do & Co, the airline caterer, previously used the site. The airport owns the land. It told the newspaper that Do & Co's lease expired in March, leaving the plot's future use open.

Red Bull's aviation collection has grown steadily since the Flying Bulls were founded in 1996. It now holds 24 historic aircraft and helicopters. The centerpiece is a Douglas DC-6B built in 1958, which once served as a government aircraft for former Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito.

The car collection is growing too. Last year Mark Mateschitz, son of the late energy drink magnate Didi Mateschitz, took over the collection of former Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone: 69 unique grand prix and Formula 1 cars spanning 70 years of motorsport. The reported purchase price was 595 million euros.

Red Bull declined to comment officially on the possible hangar project. The airport's confirmation that the catering lease has ended means it is clear who will control the site going forward, the report said.
