Fokker 50 overran Mogadishu runway after engine torque loss, Dutch board says

A Starsky Aviation Fokker 50 lost power on its left engine after departing Mogadishu and overran runway 23 on landing. None of the 54 people on board was hurt, but the aircraft was significantly damaged.

A Fokker 50 operated by Starsky Aviation ran off the end of runway 23 at Mogadishu on 10 February and came to rest on a beach. The Dutch Safety Board has released details of the sequence in a half-year update.

According to the board, the turboprop was in its initial climb from Aden Adde airport when the left engine lost torque, with its reading falling to zero. The captain chose to secure the engine and turn back towards Mogadishu.

The aircraft landed back on runway 23 in gusty winds. Braking and thrust reversers were not enough to slow it and it ran past the runway end.

All 54 occupants escaped injury. The airframe took significant damage.

The aircraft is registered 6O-YAS and is powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PW125 engines.

Somalia's aircraft accident investigation authority is responsible for the investigation. It has not yet published findings, and no cause has been formally established.
