Hollywood Burbank Airport Opens New $1.3 Billion Terminal

Hollywood Burbank Airport's replacement terminal opened to passengers on Tuesday after nearly three years of construction, about 50% larger than the complex it replaces.

Hollywood Burbank Airport's new terminal opened to passengers Tuesday after almost three years of construction. It covers 355,000 square feet and has 14 gates.

Inside are a single centralized ticketing hall, one TSA checkpoint, an indoor baggage claim area, and dining and retail space beyond security. The building replaces the airport's old terminal complex, which consisted of two terminals in a single structure.

According to officials, the new building is roughly 50% larger than the old one, with higher ceilings, more charging stations, and a more modern finish. One of the airport's best-known features is unchanged: passengers still board and leave aircraft outdoors, walking directly onto the tarmac.

On Tuesday, employees were sent to the old building to redirect travelers who did not know the new terminal had opened.

The original terminal dates to the 1930s and was renovated and expanded in the 1970s and 1980s to house Terminals A and B. Demolition of the old building is expected in 2027.
