Hong Kong airport reports double-digit passenger growth for September

Passenger numbers at Hong Kong International Airport rose 10.2% year on year in September to 4.86 million, with flight movements and cargo also up, according to the airport operator.

Hong Kong International Airport handled 4.86 million passengers in September, up 10.2% from a year earlier, with growth recorded across all main traffic categories.

Flight movements rose 7.0% to 32,175 for the month, and cargo volume increased 6.3% to 433,000 tonnes.

Transfer and transit travellers again accounted for most of the passenger growth, posting a double-digit gain. Visitors were next, up 5% year on year. Most regional markets grew, with the Chinese Mainland contributing the most, and the decline in Middle East traffic continued to ease.

Transhipments and imports drove September's cargo increase, rising 26.9% and 9.2% respectively. Southeast Asia and the Chinese Mainland led the growth, offsetting lower volumes from Europe after the EU removed its duty-free de minimis exemption in July.

In the first nine months of the year, the airport processed 49.1 million passengers and 302,075 aircraft movements, up 10.1% and 3.9% year on year. Cargo grew 3.1% to 3.78 million tonnes over the same period.

In the 12 months to the end of September, passenger throughput was 65.4 million, up 11.5%; aircraft movements climbed 4.9% to 405,945; and cargo rose 3.3% to 5.18 million tonnes.
