How American, United and Delta each retired the Boeing 747

American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines all flew the Boeing 747 but retired it on different timelines, with United keeping the type for nearly five decades. None of the three still had passenger 747s in service after 2017.

American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines each flew the Boeing 747, but their histories with the jumbo jet diverged. American stepped back from the type comparatively early. United kept the 747 for close to fifty years, the longest of the three. Delta went through two separate generations of the aircraft, after first deciding the jet was too big for its network. By the end of 2017, all three carriers had stopped flying the 747 in passenger service.
