Iberia marks 80 years of Madrid–Buenos Aires flights
Iberia is commemorating eight decades since its first Madrid–Buenos Aires service, which began with a Douglas DC-4 in 1946.
Iberia is marking 80 years since it first flew between Madrid and Buenos Aires. The inaugural service left Madrid for the Argentine capital on 22 September 1946, flown with a Douglas DC-4, according to the airline's account of the anniversary.
The DC-4 took roughly 36 hours for the journey and stopped at Villa Cisneros, Natal and Rio de Janeiro along the way. A first flight carrying passengers and crew followed on 15 October.
To mark the anniversary, Iberia is serving special desserts on Tuesday on its flights between the two cities, including several creations made with dulce de leche.
Today the Spanish carrier connects Madrid and Buenos Aires three times a day, mainly with Airbus A350 aircraft. It temporarily raised the schedule to four daily flights in June, July and August 2026. Argentina is one of the focus markets in the airline's strategic plan through 2030.
