Iranian delegation's UN General Assembly flight routed via Algiers to New York
An Iranian government Airbus A340 flew from Tehran to New York with a technical stop in Algiers, then was repositioned to Baltimore to ease congestion at JFK during the UN General Assembly.
An Iranian official delegation flew to New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on a multi-leg trip that included a planned technical stop in North Africa, according to an account of the aircraft's movements.
The delegation departed Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport at 8:15 AM local time on September 22 aboard a 34-year-old Airbus A340-311 registered EP-IGI. The aircraft climbed to 38,000 feet over Turkey, crossed Greek and Italian airspace, and landed at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers about six hours into the journey.
After a two-hour layover, it departed at 1:45 PM local time, routed northwest over Spain, and crossed the North Atlantic. It landed on Runway 04R at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 6:15 PM Eastern time.
The aircraft did not remain in New York. Shortly after arrival it was repositioned to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, where it was to stay parked for the duration of the event, a move described as intended to ease congestion at JFK amid a heavy influx of head-of-state aircraft.
