Italian carriers oppose Emirates Milan–Lima fifth-freedom route
ITA Airways and Neos have asked Italy's civil aviation authority to deny Emirates additional traffic rights for a planned Milan Malpensa–Lima service. Emirates wants to extend fifth-freedom rights it already uses between Milan and New York.

ITA Airways and Neos have asked Italy's civil aviation authority, Enac, to refuse Emirates additional traffic rights for a planned direct service between Milan Malpensa and Lima, according to Corriere della Sera.
Emirates already holds fifth-freedom rights on the Milan-New York route and wants to add the Peruvian capital. Fifth-freedom rights let an airline carry passengers between two countries that are neither its home state nor the aircraft's state of registry. That is what the dispute turns on.
Neos president Lupo Rattazzi warned in an October 8 letter that Emirates could gradually build Milan into a European long-haul hub. Aeroitalia has also opposed additional approvals, the newspaper reported.
