Southwest Airlines is looking at a possible Boeing 787 Dreamliner acquisition that would allow it to fly international long-haul routes, according to Reuters. The Dreamliner is seen as the favourite in the US budget carrier's fleet planning. No final decision has been made.

To date Southwest has flown only Boeing 737s. Long-haul service would broaden its business model and bring it into more direct competition with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.

Reuters reports that internal discussion has covered a fleet of several dozen 787s.
