Lufthansa 747 diverting to Manchester declared emergency over UK
A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 flying from Frankfurt to Toronto squawked 7700 over the United Kingdom and landed at Manchester. The cause of the emergency declaration has not been confirmed.
A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 flying from Frankfurt to Toronto diverted to Manchester on Saturday, 26 September. Its crew set the emergency transponder code 7700 while over the United Kingdom.
The aircraft, registered D-ABVY, landed at Manchester at about 15:57 local time and was met by emergency vehicles. It stopped on a taxiway for checks that included monitoring of its brakes. According to AIRLIVE, it landed carrying fuel loaded for the transatlantic sector.
Why the crew declared an emergency has not been confirmed. Squawking 7700 signals a general emergency and does not on its own point to a technical fault or a medical problem.
An initial plan for the jet to continue to Toronto was reported, but a later departure has not been verified. The return sector from Toronto to Frankfurt, LH471, has been cancelled.
