Manassas Airport earns first Virginia Part 139 certificate in 53 years

Washington Manassas Airport (HEF) in Virginia has been awarded a Part 139 operating certificate by the US Federal Aviation Administration. The designation permits the airport to handle certain commercial passenger flights.
Part 139 is a US safety standard for airports serving scheduled and other commercial passenger operations. It sets requirements covering runways, rescue and firefighting services, emergency planning, and wildlife management.
The FAA says the approval is the first of its kind for a Virginia airport in 53 years. The agency has also invested more than $46 million in the airport's infrastructure over the past five years, including the runway and a planned new control tower.
