Milan Malpensa Airport formally named after Silvio Berlusconi
Milan Malpensa now officially carries the name of former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, a renaming decided in 2024. The move drew mixed reactions, with Milan's mayor staying away from the ceremony.
Milan Malpensa Airport has officially been renamed after former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and will be known as Aeroporto Milano-Malpensa Silvio Berlusconi.
The decision to rename the airport was taken in 2024, according to the news agency Ansa.
Berlusconi's eldest daughter Marina was visibly moved at the renaming, saying it filled her with "pride and emotion" that thousands of travellers from around the world would arrive each day at an airport bearing her father's name.
Not everyone shares the enthusiasm. Milan's mayor, Giuseppe Sala, who had opposed the renaming, stayed away from the celebrations. "What was I supposed to do? Show up with a forced smile?" he said on Instagram.
Berlusconi died in 2023. Between 1994 and 2011 he was elected Italian prime minister four times, serving more than nine years in office in total. His political career was accompanied by numerous judicial proceedings.
