Travel groups form coalition on biometrics use at airports

Five travel and technology organisations have set up a coalition to press EU policymakers on the use of biometrics in air travel, urging rules that keep passenger choice and privacy intact.

Airports Council International Europe, Amadeus, the International Air Transport Association, IDEMIA Public Security and SITA have formed the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition.

The group is addressing EU policymakers over the Digital Omnibus reform proposals. According to the coalition, it wants those proposals to back voluntary, secure use of biometrics in travel while protecting passenger choice and privacy.

It is asking for a balanced regulatory approach, which it says would allow a smoother, more convenient experience for air travellers while keeping firm safeguards on how biometric technologies are used.
