Winair considers second Caribbean base as it looks beyond St. Maarten

Caribbean carrier Winair is weighing a second operational base on another island as it expands its regional network, its managing director said. The airline, based on St. Maarten, marks 65 years of flying in 2026.

Winair is considering opening a second base on another island in the region as part of plans to grow its network, managing director Hans van de Velde said.

The airline is based on St. Maarten. Founded in 1961, it will mark 65 years of operations in 2026, and it has grown into a significant provider of regional connections across the Caribbean.

Van de Velde said Winair's role is expected to keep expanding in the coming years, with the carrier looking increasingly beyond its home island. Its stated aim is to build out its route network rather than stay confined to St. Maarten.

Winair has not disclosed which island would host the additional base or when it might open.
