Incident
On the afternoon of August 15, 1959, American Airlines Flight 514, a training flight, crashed near its destination at the Grumman Aircraft Corporation airfield in Calverton, New York. The flight had originated from Idlewild International Airport in Queens, New York. All five crew members aboard the Boeing 707 died in the crash.

The aircraft was a Boeing 707, a model that had entered commercial service in October 1958. This accident marked the first recorded crash of a Boeing 707.
Context
Within the subsequent three years, two other American Airlines 707 flights in the New York area would also crash: Flight 1502 and Flight 1.
