Background
The runway was 2500 feet long and had trees on three sides. Normal landing direction was from east to west, while departures were from west to east.
Accident Sequence
The pilot conducted a long, shallow approach from the east with a tailwind, maintaining about 65 knots. He used 40 degrees of flaps and kept the engine at 1400 to 1500 RPM after landing. Immediately after touchdown, he realized his speed was too high and reduced power abruptly. The aircraft then encountered a dip in the runway surface, causing it to lift off again. Committed to landing, the pilot was unable to stop within the remaining runway. The aircraft continued off the end and collided with trees.
Procedure Reference
The procedure for a short field landing with full flaps (40 degrees) specifies holding 60 knots until flare, reducing power to idle after clearing obstacles, touching down on the main wheels first, applying heavy braking, and retracting the flaps.
