Student Pilot Loses Control During Hover in Gusty Conditions (N9078N)

What happened

A non-certified flight instructor was providing instruction to a student pilot who had accumulated only six hours of total time in helicopters. During the training session, the student pilot attempted to lift the aircraft into a hover. At this critical phase of flight, a gust of wind struck the helicopter from the right side. In response, the student pilot moved the cyclic pitch control to the left. This input caused the aircraft to roll over onto its left side. The instructor reported that his attempts to stop the roll were ineffective.
