Incident Details
During cruise flight approximately eight miles from the airport, the pilot observed the oil pressure fluctuating before it began decreasing, accompanied by a corresponding drop in engine torque output. The pilot followed the emergency checklist and shut down the engine while the aircraft was positioned over the airport. To lose altitude, the pilot executed a spiral descent in preparation for a power-off forced landing. While aligning with the runway, the pilot allowed the aircraft to descend too low, resulting in a landing short of the intended runway in a field.
Post-Accident Examination
FAA inspectors examined the aircraft and engine at the accident site. They discovered oil covering the right side of the lower fuselage. The oil filler cap was found loose within the filler neck. No evidence of oil leakage was observed from any part of the engine or oil lines. The O-rings inside the oil filler neck were found in place, and the filler neck itself remained attached to the engine with the correct torque.
Pilot Actions
Prior to departure, the pilot had serviced the oil quantity. After the power loss, the pilot followed the checklist to secure the engine and attempted to reach the runway but landed short.
