Event Summary
A student pilot reported that the engine lost power, prompting an emergency landing procedure. The pilot switched fuel tanks, applied carburetor heat, and checked the magnetos. However, before touching down, the engine restarted. The student then applied full power and began to climb, unaware of power lines directly ahead. The aircraft struck the power lines, subsequently colliding with a freeway guard rail and an automobile before coming to rest on a highway.
Aircraft Damage and Fuel Findings
The left wing caught fire, and the left fuel tank was destroyed by the blaze. Investigators found only half a gallon of fuel remaining in the right tank. The temperature and dew point at the time were 67°F and 58°F, respectively.
Carburetor Icing and Fuel Selector
According to icing probability charts, serious carburetor ice would be probable at glide power settings, and visible icing would occur at rated power under the observed conditions. Additionally, the investigation revealed that if the fuel selector was moved to an intermediate position beyond the off position, no fuel would flow to the engine.
No specific cause for the initial power loss was stated in the investigation.
