Accident Overview
The aircraft ran off the runway and collided with a snowbank during landing. The aircraft had veered off the left side of the runway. The certified flight instructor (CFI) stated that the left tire was flat when the aircraft was pulled from the snowbank. The tire was later re-inflated and retained its pressure.
Maintenance History
The aircraft had been subjected to previous damage that had not been fully repaired when a mechanic released it for further flight. A bolt, described by the mechanic as slightly worn, was reused in the right landing gear. According to a statement by the same mechanic, this bolt was involved with control of the fore and aft motion of the right landing gear.
Damage Assessment
The right wing of the accident aircraft was damaged where the spar connects to the landing gear. The mechanic's assessment of the current damage was "side load damage" to the right spar.
