Incident Overview
A student pilot was conducting a solo pattern flight at Bay Bridge Airport after the certified flight instructor (CFI) exited the aircraft. The CFI initially instructed the student to take the aircraft around the traffic pattern. The student taxied to Runway 28 and waited while other traffic departed. During this time, the CFI announced over UNICOM that the landing direction had changed. The student then taxied to the opposite end of the runway and became the first aircraft to depart in the new direction.
Final Approach and Loss of Control
The aircraft remained in the traffic pattern. On short final, the aircraft was observed drifting to the left. According to the CFI, there was approximately a 10-knot crosswind, and the approach appeared normal until the last few feet above the runway. At that point, a gust of wind apparently pushed the aircraft further left. The CFI reported that the aircraft then pitched up and banked to the left before nosing down into trees located north of the runway.
Aftermath
The sequence of events ended with the aircraft impacting trees north of the runway. No further details regarding the aircraft or occupants were provided in the source.
