Incident Details
During high-altitude cruise, an in-flight fire ignited inside a cargo igloo. The fire originated from the spillage of nitric acid, which came into contact with a wooden packing crate. Upon depressurization of the aircraft, the fire extinguished. However, smoke and acid fumes persisted, posing a hazard to the cockpit crew.
Emergency Descent and Landing
The crew initiated an emergency descent and attempted an approach at Charleston, West Virginia, but executed a missed approach. Subsequently, an emergency landing was performed at Cincinnati, Ohio.
Crew Equipment Issues
The crew reported that the smoke goggles and emergency oxygen masks hindered their operations and communications. As a result, improvements were being implemented to develop a more practical and efficient model.
