A student pilot and CFI experienced engine roughness and failure during stall recovery. After partial power and mixture adjustments, the engine quit. The CFI made a forced landing in a marshy area, resulting in a nose-over and fence impact.

Accident Overview

A student pilot and a certified flight instructor (CFI) were conducting slow flight and stall practice. Carburetor heat was applied before the start of each stall series. During the recovery from the final stall, the student pilot applied only partial power. The CFI then applied full power, at which point the engine began to run rough. The CFI subsequently increased the mixture to full rich, and the engine ran better, with RPM increasing by approximately 150–200 RPM for a short period before it again began to run rough and then quit entirely.

Forced Landing

The CFI later stated that he was surprised when the propeller stopped at an indicated airspeed of 75–70 knots. The CFI assumed control of the aircraft and executed a forced landing in a marshy area. During the landing, the aircraft went through a fence and nosed over.

Post-Crash Examination

A post-crash examination of the aircraft revealed no anomalies that would have precluded normal operations.
