Incident Overview
During a cross-country flight, the pilot became disoriented and radioed for assistance in determining their position. The flight was identified as being south of the intended destination. The pilot also reported being low on fuel and requested directions to the nearest airport.
Final Approach
While on final approach to the airport, the engine lost power. The pilot executed a landing, but the aircraft touched down approximately 300 yards short of the runway. During the landing roll, the aircraft struck a fence and a ditch.
Post-Accident Inspection
After the accident, the fuel tanks were inspected. They were found intact and completely empty of fuel.
