What happened
The incident occurred when a student pilot made a critical error during the approach phase by selecting the wrong runway for the prevailing wind conditions. Instead of aligning with the wind to land into it, the pilot attempted a downwind landing while encountering a strong quartering tailwind. This configuration significantly increased ground speed and reduced controllability.
As the aircraft reached the flare point just before touchdown, the excessive speed and crosswind component caused the plane to turn sharply to the right. The pilot was unable to regain directional control during this critical phase of flight. Consequently, the aircraft touched down well to the right of the runway centerline. Upon leaving the paved surface, the nose gear collapsed, causing the airplane to nosed over.
The investigation
Post-accident examination revealed that the primary factor leading to the loss of control was the selection of an inappropriate runway for the wind conditions. The pilot's awareness of the significant tailwind component only manifested after exiting the wreckage, indicating a lack of situational awareness during the approach and landing sequence.
