What happened
Prior to a scheduled night departure from a local airport, the pilot performed routine refueling procedures on the airplane. Shortly thereafter, during the initial climb phase of flight, the engine experienced a complete loss of power. With no option for continued ascent or return to the departure field, the pilot was forced to execute an emergency landing on unsuitable terrain below.
The investigation
Following the accident, investigators conducted a thorough evaluation of the fuel system and remaining fuel samples. The analysis revealed that the aviation gasoline used for refueling had been contaminated with Jet A type fuel. This contamination is incompatible with piston-engine aircraft and resulted in the engine failure observed during the climb.
Findings
The primary factor contributing to this accident was the presence of Jet A fuel in the aircraft's fuel tanks. The use of incorrect fuel type led directly to the loss of power. No other mechanical failures or pilot errors were identified as contributing factors beyond the fuel contamination event.
