During a training flight, the trainee was on final approach at 95 KIAS when the instructor called for a go-around. After full power application, the instructor observed a left yaw, took control, feathered the left propeller, but the aircraft continued turning left and collided with the ground about 120 degrees left of the runway heading. Subsequent teardown found no engine failure.

Approach and Go-Around

The trainee pilot was flying a final approach at an indicated airspeed of 95 knots with the engine power set to approximately 400 pounds of torque. The instructor pilot directed the trainee to execute a go-around. In response, the trainee applied full power.

Loss of Control

Shortly after the application of full power, the instructor pilot observed a left yaw developing. The instructor then took control of the airplane and feathered the left propeller. Despite this action, the aircraft continued its left yaw and turn until it collided with the ground. The ground impact occurred at a heading approximately 120 degrees to the left of the runway heading.

Engine Examination

A teardown inspection of the left engine and its controls was conducted. The examination revealed no anomalies that would have caused a powerplant failure.
