Incident Overview
According to witness and passenger statements, the engine did not appear to produce adequate power during the takeoff roll. The airplane required the entire 8,000-foot runway to become airborne. Following departure, the pilot radioed the tower that he was experiencing engine problems and was returning to the airport.
Collision Sequence
The airplane was observed turning left in a steep turn at an altitude of approximately 200 feet above the ground. It subsequently collided with trees and then the ground. Open terrain existed at the departure end of the runway.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the engine revealed cylinder compression readings of 40/80, 30/80, 42/80, and 72/80. No other discrepancies were found. The airplane had been modified to increase the takeoff manifold pressure from 36 to 38.5 inches of mercury.
Recent Maintenance
Two days before the accident, the engine had quit while the airplane was taxiing after landing. A mechanic reported that he adjusted the throttle linkage to increase the idle setting.
