Event Summary
A pilot reported experiencing abnormal control forces during cruise flight at 1,500 feet above ground level. The pilot described feeling a strong leftward push on the airplane, which caused the left wing to drop. In response, the pilot applied right yoke input to counteract the tendency. The aircraft then began to pitch downward, leading the pilot to apply back pressure on the yoke. While maintaining hard pressure, the pilot heard a popping sound from the dashboard and suspected that a component had failed.
Emergency Landing
Believing something had given way, the pilot turned the airplane to the left toward an open area. The pilot partially extended the flaps and lowered the landing gear in preparation for an emergency landing on a road. However, the airplane overshot the intended landing zone and touched down in a soybean field. During the landing roll, the airplane struck a row of trees at the edge of the field.
Post-Accident Examination
After the accident, investigators confirmed control system continuity from the cockpit controls to the elevator, ailerons, and rudder. However, the cockpit instrumentation, radio equipment, and associated tubing and wiring were destroyed by a post-crash fire. As a result, it was not possible to determine whether any of these items had interfered with the operation of the flight controls. The cause of the control difficulty was not identified.
