Incident Overview
A cargo jet was struck by an airport employee shuttle bus while taxiing in a nonmovement area. The collision occurred during predawn hours under visual meteorological conditions. The airplane captain was seriously injured.
Bus Driver Account
The bus driver reported stopping at a stop sign and activating the vehicle's 4-way flasher lights. After looking both ways, the driver observed one inbound aircraft to the right that had stopped. The driver did not see the airplane approaching from the left as he began crossing the cargo ramp.
Airplane Crew Account
The airplane crew stated they did not see the bus until seconds before impact.
Physical Evidence
Airplane skid marks, measuring 22 and 24 feet in length, were noted on the taxiway. No bus skid marks were observed on the roadway.
