Incident Overview
During an annual inspection, mechanics discovered leaking fuel tank caps and water-contaminated fuel. After completing the inspection, including replacing the caps and extensive purging of the fuel system, the pilot was asked to perform a post-maintenance test flight. The pilot had been informed of the significant water contamination and was tasked with verifying the aircraft's proper operation.
Flight and Fuel System Checks
Before takeoff, the pilot operated the engine using the left fuel system but did not select the right tank to check for residual water contamination. Additionally, the pilot did not test the right fuel system while at altitude or in a location where an airport was easily reachable in case of engine failure.
Power Loss and Landing
After descending toward the en route destination, the pilot switched to the right fuel system. Shortly thereafter, the engine experienced a complete loss of power. Unable to extend the glide to the intended airport, the pilot performed a landing on a municipal baseball field. Although the touchdown was successful, the pilot could not stop the aircraft before it impacted the backstop.
