Incident Overview
A pilot reported that he conducted only rough fuel consumption calculations and did not obtain winds aloft information for a six-leg cross-country flight. After landing following the fifth leg, the pilot used a dipstick to measure fuel and determined that each tank contained approximately half capacity. He then added 10 gallons of fuel and departed at 1655 for the return leg.
Sequence of Events
While flying at 3,000 feet mean sea level, the engine began surging. The pilot declared an emergency at 1843 and executed a forced landing in a field. After touchdown, the airplane nosed over.
Post-Accident Examination
During recovery, after the wings were removed, a total of approximately one-half gallon of fuel was drained from the fuel tanks. Post-accident, the fuel transmitters were examined and showed no evidence of preimpact failure or malfunction. The engine was started and operated to 1,700 rpm with no discrepancies noted; it was not operated at higher rpm due to safety concerns.
Conclusions
The pilot's rough fuel calculations and failure to obtain winds aloft resulted in insufficient fuel for the flight, leading to engine surging and a subsequent forced landing. The aircraft nosed over upon landing.
