Accident Summary
An airplane impacted a concrete levee after experiencing a complete loss of engine power shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred during a forced landing procedure, during which the aircraft contacted trees and a 10-foot high concrete levee.
Pilot Account
According to the pilot, the flight departed normally. Approximately five minutes into the flight, a loud bang was heard, followed by a total loss of engine power. The pilot initiated a forced landing, but the airplane struck trees and a concrete levee during the maneuver.
Examination Findings
Post-accident examination of the wreckage revealed that the single-drive magneto had separated from its accessory drive. Additionally, the threads on the housing attachment bolts showed indications inconsistent with properly torqued and secured attaching hardware. No other mechanical anomalies were reported.
