Accident Sequence

The single-engine airplane was conducting a 228-nautical mile night cross-country flight when it impacted a cotton field after a loss of control during an in-flight encounter with a thunderstorm. The flight originated under visual flight rules (VFR). While airborne, the pilot observed lightning in the distance and contacted a Flight Service Station (FSS) via radio to inquire about weather radar returns between their position and destination. The flight specialist reported scattered thunderstorm activity along the route and suggested a northern deviation. The specialist also informed the pilot of an AIRMET for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) conditions, noting that VFR flight was not recommended and that the destination airport reported a broken ceiling at 600 feet above ground level.
