Accident Summary
A seaplane accident occurred during takeoff from a lake when the aircraft failed to achieve the planned rotation point and subsequently struck a berm. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, reported no injuries and no mechanical problems with the airplane.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, the available takeoff area on the lake was 2,200 feet long. He had computed the required takeoff distance as 1,990 feet. A preflight inspection and engine run-up were completed with no anomalies noted. The pilot then water taxied the airplane to the designated start point and initiated the takeoff by increasing engine power.
During the takeoff roll, the airplane did not rotate at the planned point. The pilot applied aft pressure on the control yoke, and the aircraft became airborne. However, it then struck a three-foot-tall berm and subsequently collided with the marsh, where it came to a complete stop.
Investigation Findings
The pilot stated that there were no mechanical issues with the airplane and attributed the accident to his failure to achieve the proper takeoff point, which led to the collision with the berm during the initial climb. No other factors were reported.
