Mechanic's Foot Run Over by Nose Landing Gear During Pushback (N402UP)

Incident Overview

During pushback operations of a Boeing 757, a mechanic positioned to the right of the nose landing gear received clearance from the flight crew to begin the procedure. The tow tractor driver initiated the movement by turning the nose wheel left to align the aircraft. As the airplane was pushed back from the ramp area to the taxiway, the mechanic observed a small airplane taxiing behind the tail. In response, he signaled the towing operation to stop. The driver applied the brakes slowly. Both individuals were preoccupied with watching the taxiing aircraft. The right wheel of the Boeing's nose landing gear continued to roll over the mechanic's right foot, which the tow tractor driver did not observe due to the position of the airplane's landing gear. The mechanic sustained numerous fractures to his foot and ankle.
