Accident Sequence
The pilot was cleared for a low approach to the instrument landing system runway 6 approach and acknowledged the clearance. Approximately five minutes later, the pilot advised the control tower that he was "going around." Shortly thereafter, radar tracking showed the airplane making a left climbing turn. It then entered a rapid descent, after which its radar target disappeared. Witnesses near the accident site reported observing the airplane enter a slow descending spin and crash into a wooded area.
Weather Conditions
At the time of the accident, the visibility was reported as 1.5 miles in mist, with a 200-foot overcast ceiling. These conditions may have contributed to spatial disorientation during the go-around, as noted in the investigation.
Investigation Findings
An on-site examination of the wreckage concluded with no mechanical or flight control anomalies found with the airplane. The investigation noted that due to the weather conditions during the final approach, the pilot may have experienced spatial disorientation during the go-around.
