Accident Overview
On February 27, 2008, at 0948 Chilean standard time, a Cessna 210M (registration CC-KKU) was destroyed when it impacted the Penalolen Municipal Stadium in the southeast quadrant of Santiago, Chile. The aircraft was operated by Club Aereo de Personal de Carabineros. Two pilots and four passengers on board were fatally injured, along with five individuals on the ground. More than 20 people on the ground sustained serious injuries.
Aircraft and Flight
The Cessna 210M was engaged in a local instructional flight that had originated at Eulogio Sanchez (Tobalaba) Airport (SCTB) in Santiago. The flight was conducted under Chilean flight regulations. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed.
Sequence of Events
According to Chilean investigators, after takeoff the airplane departed the airport to the southeast. Approximately one minute later, the aircraft initiated a left turn back toward the airport. It was unable to maintain altitude and subsequently struck an area of the stadium where people had gathered for organized aerobics classes. Upon impact, the airplane burst into flames.
