What happened
On July 10, 2008, at approximately 10:28 AST, a Raytheon Aircraft Company 99A, registered as CC-CFM, crashed approximately one mile north of La Paloma Airport (SCPF) in Puerto Montt, Chile. The aircraft was operating a scheduled domestic passenger flight from SCPF to Aerodromo de Melinka (SCMK) under instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) with a visibility of approximately 3.1 miles and winds of 010 degrees at 14 knots.
Shortly after departing SCPF at approximately 10:25, the pilot notified the airport multi-communication frequency that the aircraft was returning to the airport due to an unspecified problem. Witnesses observed the aft cowling of the left engine fluttering, though the component did not detach from the engine. Following this, the aircraft entered an uncontrolled descent and struck rising terrain. The impact and subsequent post-crash fire destroyed the aircraft. There were 9 fatal injuries, involving the pilot and eight passengers.
