Accident Details
On August 31, 2008, at approximately 0830 central daylight time, a Fantasy Air SRO Allegro 2000, registration N1005W, sustained substantial damage during a landing attempt at Big Foot Airfield in Walworth, Wisconsin. The aircraft was operated by a student pilot on a personal flight under 14 CFR Part 91 in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The flight had originated from Dupage Airport in West Chicago, Illinois, about 0800.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, during the landing rollout after touchdown, the airplane suddenly veered to the left after traveling about 40 to 50 feet. The pilot reported being unable to correct the deviation before the left wing struck corn bordering the runway. The impact caused the airplane to spin approximately 180 degrees. During the encounter, the right main landing gear fractured approximately midway between the wheel and the attachment point at the fuselage.
Damage and Examination
Post-accident examination revealed damage to both wings, including underlying ribs, as well as the right landing gear and the lower portion of the rudder. Control system continuity was confirmed, and no preimpact defects were found. Inspection of the grass runway surface identified no defects that could have contributed to the accident.
