Incident Overview
A pilot and passenger, traveling across the country to visit backcountry airstrips, had spent two nights at a remote strip. They then decided on a day flight to another airstrip in the area, which measured 1,500 feet in length and 50 feet in width.
Pilot Account
After surveying the landing area, the pilot stated that as he neared the approach end of the runway, the airplane was approximately 20 feet above ground level when it dropped straight down. He indicated that his airspeed was slow and that he most likely encountered a downdraft.
Sequence of Events
The airplane subsequently landed hard on the runway surface. It then porpoised before impacting rising terrain and trees. The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions during the flight.
Investigation Findings
No mechanical malfunctions were reported. The pilot attributed the event to a downdraft encountered at low altitude with slow airspeed.
