Accident Overview
A pilot reported that a landing on an ice runway was smooth until the airplane began to drift left. The pilot, uncertain of the effects of heavy rudder and brake inputs on ice, was hesitant to use them. As the pilot continued to apply right rudder, the left main landing gear began “dragging on snow,” which prevented the airplane from turning right. The airplane subsequently veered into a snow bank, resulting in substantial damage to the firewall.
Pilot's Account
The pilot stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures of the airplane. The entire event was attributed to the pilot's handling of the controls in response to the icy conditions.

At the time of the accident, a crosswind was present at 16 knots, gusting to 23 knots.

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the firewall as a result of colliding with a snow bank.
