What happened
On August 24, 2011, a MAULE M-5-210C, registration N62019, was involved in an accident near Tok, Alaska. The pilot attempted to land at an off-airport location but aborted the initial landing attempt after determining the aircraft was unable to outclimb the surrounding terrain.
Following this decision, the pilot selected a secondary landing site. This second site was characterized by rough terrain. During the landing roll on this secondary site, the aircraft sustained substantial damage to the left wing and the left lift strut. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
The investigation
Investigators found that there were no mechanical issues with the aircraft prior to the accident.
