Overview
A pilot departing from a private airstrip experienced a loss of engine power while en route to a local airport to purchase fuel.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot's account, the engine stopped producing power during the flight. In an effort to restore engine operation, the pilot moved the fuel selector from the left wing tank to the right wing tank and activated the boost pump. Despite these actions, the engine could not be restarted. The pilot subsequently performed a forced landing in a cow pasture.
Postaccident Examination
An examination of the aircraft after the accident revealed substantial damage to the firewall and fuselage. When the fuel systems were checked, investigators drained approximately one quart of fuel from the left wing tank and about 16 gallons of fuel from the right wing tank.
