Incident Overview

A pilot reported an incident involving a Sport Cruiser aircraft shortly after takeoff. During the crosswind turn, the canopy unexpectedly opened. The pilot continued to fly the airplane while attempting to hold the canopy down with his left hand.

Aircraft Handling Challenges

Following the canopy opening, the airplane began to porpoise and lose altitude. The pilot was unable to achieve a slow cruise stable attitude. Despite the difficulties, he continued to maneuver the aircraft for an emergency landing on the duty runway.
