Accident Overview
A pilot reported that during the approach phase of flight, the canopy of the airplane unexpectedly opened. The pilot described the event as creating a distraction because it was "like a tornado in the plane." In an attempt to manage the situation, the pilot tried to hold the canopy closed. During this confusion, the airplane impacted the ground short of the runway.
