Accident Overview
The pilot was conducting a GPS approach to landing under instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) with icing present. As the aircraft descended, it broke out of the weather at approximately 300 feet above ground level and 300 feet to the right of the runway centerline. The pilot noted that about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of ice had accumulated on the wings.
Landing and Ground Roll
After breaking out, the pilot initiated a correction to align with the runway but overshot the intended landing point. The aircraft subsequently landed hard in the grass adjacent to the runway. Following touchdown, the airplane traveled approximately 1,000 feet across the grass before re-entering the runway surface.
Postaccident Examination
A postaccident inspection of the aircraft revealed that the rear spar of the right wing was bent. The pilot did not report any mechanical malfunctions with the airplane before or during the flight.
