Incident Overview
A pilot flying a tailwheel-equipped airplane conducted several practice banner pick-ups before joining the traffic pattern for landing. The final approach proceeded without incident, with the tailwheel contacting the runway first followed by the airplane settling onto the surface.
Landing and Ground Loop
During the landing roll, the airplane began to veer to the right. In response, the pilot applied full power in an attempt to "fly out of the ground loop." As airspeed increased, the airplane departed the runway, collided with a taxiway sign, and came to rest inverted.
Damage and Mechanical Status
The fuselage sustained substantial damage as a result of the accident sequence. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation.
