False Bleed Overpressure Alert During Takeoff at Warsaw Chopin Airport

Casualties unknown • EPWA, PL

An Embraer 170 operated by PLL LOT experienced a false bleed air overpressure warning during takeoff from Warsaw, leading to an aborted takeoff.

What happened

On June 13, 2013, an Embraer 170 operated by PLL LOT was performing a takeoff from Warsaw Chopin Airport (EPWA). After the crew advanced the engine thrust levers to takeoff power, a BLEED OVERPRESS (bleed 1) message appeared on the Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS).

In response to the alert, the crew decided to abort the takeoff. The aircraft decelerated to a maximum speed of 21 knots CAS before the runway was vacated. Following the aborted takeoff, the pilot consulted with the Maintenance Control Center (MCC). The captain then performed a reset of the cabin pressure system. Following the reset, the warning signal disappeared, and the pilot decided to continue the flight as planned. The malfunction did not recur during subsequent operations.

The investigation

The PKBWL investigation focused on the cause of the EICAS alert and the crew's decision-making process during the aborted takeoff. The investigation established that the alert was not indicative of an actual mechanical failure in the bleed air system.

Probable cause

The incident was caused by a false bleed air overpressure indication on the EICAS.
